enero 12, 2016

A recent report from the PEW Charitable Trusts finds that the exploitation of drifting fish aggregating devices (FADs) to catch tuna is on the rise, with FAD development more than doubled since 2006 in the Pacific Ocean alone. From 2011 to 2013, the estimated number FADs deployed worldwide grew from as many as 105,000 to as many as 121,000 – a 14 percent increase in only two years.  Leer Más >

One Night in Bangkok - Part III: Baht Actors: Friend of the Sea and Earth Island Institute

diciembre 9, 2015

This past November, Friend of the Sea and Dolphin-Safe (aka Earth Island Institute) hosted a meeting in Bangkok with the Thai Tuna Industry Association to reach out to retail and catering buyers. The purpose of this meeting was to convince retail and catering buyers that the only tuna to buy is tuna labelled dolphin safe and that by requesting and buying “dolphin safe” tuna, more suppliers will be incentivized to change their fishing methods. On Friday, the WTO issued their final decision in the long running trade dispute between Mexico and the United States regarding the use of dolphin-safe labels in the U.S. marketplace. The Appellate Body, the final word on this case, has agreed with Mexico’s claims that the United States has failed for years to comply with the 2011 ruling of the Appellate Body.

This victory for Mexico proves that measurable harm has occurred and once and for all that the so-called “dolphin-safe” label in the United States is a fraud. Read the press release below for all the details.

Traceability: The Key to Healthy Fisheries, Strong Ecosystems and Responsible Fishing Practices

by Campaign for Eco-Safe Tuna
noviembre 19, 2015

Last month, an article featured in the respected Journal of the International Council of Trade and Sustainable Development, Bridges Trade BioRes, hit hard on why traceability is key to the U.S./Mexico World Trade Organization (WTO) disputes, how the lack of traceability requirements hinder true dolphin-safe efforts and in the end, how those false labeling schemes devastate entire ecosystems.  Leer Más >
